Changing brake pads on a car without a license

SUPPLIES AND TOOLS REQUIRED

  • New brake pads brake pads
  • 6" Allen key
  • Hammer
  • 13" pipe wrench
  • Pliers
  • Jack or jackstands + wrench for wheel removal

The steps

  • Remove the wheel from your cart, to expose the braking system

  • Loosen the 2 caliper nuts using a pipe wrench or 13 mm socket

  • Once the 2 nuts have been removed, remove the 2 screws using a 6" Allen key

  • Disconnect the brake pad wear indicator cable

  • Remove the plate holding the outer brake pad (if necessary, you can give it a few light taps up and down with a hammer)

  • With the old brake pads removed, you now need to retract the caliper piston using the multi-gripper. To do this, press gently until the brake fluid has returned to the jar. When removing the brake pads from the caliper, make sure you know which way they are facing.

  • All that's left is to install the new pads and repeat the previous steps in the opposite direction.
  • In the case of a floating assembly: reposition the mobile part of the caliper and screw it back onto the fixed part.
  • For fixed mounting: replace the pin(s)

Before starting off again, depress the brake pedal several times until it becomes hard again. For the first few kilometers, drive and brake more gently until the brake pads settle into place and begin to wear. This step also brings the pads closer to the disc, enabling the first braking action.

Check the brake fluid level, taking care not to exceed the maximum volume
