SUPPLIES AND TOOLS REQUIRED

  • - Starter
  • - Flat nose pliers
  • - Screwdriver
  • - Filter wrench
  • - Ratchet wrench (not mandatory, but recommended) or two flat wrenches (10 and 13)

THE STEPS

Removing the starter :

  • Start by disconnecting the negative terminal from your car's battery.
  • Identify the exact position of the starter motor to determine whether access is from the top or bottom, and from the front or rear of the engine (depending on the model)

- From above: there's no need to raise the car

- From below: place the car on two stanchions at the front

  • Next, locate the connections and positions of the wires (usually two, or even three) connecting the starter power supply
  • Disconnect each of these power supplies
  • Analyze the mounting points.

Depending on the model, the starter may be attached to :

- the gearbox (by two or three screws) only

- the gearbox and the rear of the starter motor to the engine (with one or two screws)

- the gearbox (with two or three screws), the same screws also being used to secure the powertrain (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda).

In this case, it's essential to place a jack under the engine to prevent it from falling out!

- the gearbox (by two or three screws), in many other cases these same screws are connected to components (air filter support, pipe support, etc.).

  • Take care to receive them
  • Removing your starter

A guide used to center the starter on the gearbox may remain attached to the starter head, in which case it must be recovered

Remember also to retrieve the mounting bracket at the rear of the starter (which will not always be supplied with the new one)

  • Once your old starter has been removed, reposition the starter's rear mounting bracket
  • Reposition the starter, making sure it's properly engaged in its guide
  • Position starter and pre-tension
  • Clean any oxidized terminals with a wire brush
  • Reconnect supply wires to starter
  • Reconnect negative battery terminal

And that's it!
