A study on the impact of tires suggests that they may pollute more than the tailpipes of late-model vehicles.
According to tests carried out by a UK-based analysis firm and reported by The Guardian, the wear and tear of tires emits 2,000 times more particulate pollutants than exhaust particles.
The tiny particles pollute air, water and soil alike, as they contain numerous toxic organic compounds, some of which are known carcinogens, according to British newspapers. While the latest models have better particulate filters for the tailpipes, these new cars are generally heavier, which means that more particles are thrown from the tires as they wear down on the road.
Tests have also shown that tires generate more than a ton of ultra-fine particles, or particles smaller than 23 nanometers, per kilometer driven. These are similarly emitted by exhaust gases and are particularly harmful to health, as their small size enables them to penetrate organs via the bloodstream.
These particles are difficult to measure and are not subject to any European or American regulations tires are far more polluting than exhaust pipes as a major source of particulate emissions.
Emission Analytics carried out wear tests on 14 brands of tires installed on a Mercedes sedan driven at normal speeds. Only after an initial estimate of the particulates emitted by the tires that Emission Analytics decided to start the new work.
"We found that the amount of material released into the environment is staggering: in the UK and the USA, 300,000 tonnes of rubber from tires comes from cars and vans every year". As a result, zero-emission electric vehicles fitted with tires are also the focus of attention.
