In 2019, 21% of passenger cars were sent for a counter-inspection after a technical inspection found a fault, i.e. 1 car in 5: an increase on 2018.
The greater the age of the vehicle, the greater the risk of a re-inspection. Nearly 30% of passenger cars over 10 years old are re-inspected after a roadworthiness test, compared with half of those between 7 and 10 years old.
75% of failures result in re-inspections.
Of the 133 points inspected during a roadworthiness test, up to 652 failures can result, and 488, or 75%, can lead to an inspection. These are essentially the most dangerous failures in terms of safety
The 488 faults that led to counter-audits were divided into two categories according to their severity:
359 major failures (technical inspection level "S") requiring a return visit within two months".
129 major breakdowns (technical inspection grade "R"), maintenance and daytime return visits are required by law.
In 2019, the vast majority (95%) of breakdowns (vehicle returned for a return visit) concerned major defects, and 5% were critical.

The price of a follow-up inspection is set by each control center. The average cost of a follow-up inspection is 14 euros, with rates varying widely from one center to another (some are free, while the most expensive cost 30 euros or more). The cost also depends on the type of inspection, as some faults only require a visual check, while others require a technical inspection with a machine, which increases the cost.
If your vehicle undergoes an inspection, it's because its condition warrants repair. These can be very inexpensive, but some are very expensive. You'll need to do them if you plan to drive your vehicle again.
The vehicle may appear at a different inspection center from the one that carries out the periodic technical inspections. Then, you need to bring unfavorable reports so that the new inspector knows what to check.
At the end of each return inspection, the inspector must provide you with a return inspection report and stamp your registration card (carte grise). This is marked with the letter A or S, depending on whether the counter-inspection is favorable or unfavorable. It also indicates the expiry date of the inspection. If the result of the counter-inspection is favorable, a sticker will be affixed to the windscreen.
