Implemented on November1, the mountain law is designed to improve traffic flow and the safety of your VSPs during snowy episodes in certain communes of France.
In 34 French départements, a law known as the loi montagne is in force whenever you drive in mountainous areas. This law applies from November1 to
november to March 31. Its aim is to improve traffic flow and motorists' safety, by limiting blockages during snowy periods.
All four-wheeled vehicles, including license-free cars, are covered by this law. To find out whether this law applies to you, you can consult the map drawn up by the
road safety.
To comply with this law, you have 2 options: be equipped with 4 winter-certified tires or a pair of snow chains. If you fail to do so, you may be subject to
a class 4 fine of up to €135 for failure to do so. This penalty may be accompanied by immobilization of the vehicle if deemed necessary.
Recognizing a winter-certified tire is simple. They are identified by a logo, a 3-peaked mountain with a snowflake. They guarantee optimum performance on snow, and safe braking
and safe braking on snow-covered roads.
