SUPPLIES AND TOOLS REQUIRED

  • Toolbox
  • Degreaser
  • Sledgehammer
  • Ratchets, extensions and sockets
  • Compressed-air blowpipe (if available)
  • Impact wrench

THE STEPS

  1. First of all, remove the variator belt as described in Stéphano the mechanic's data sheet, available in the "Belts" section: Click here to find out more.
  2. There are different solutions, depending on the make and model of the vehicle. We'll take a general approach to removal.
  3. If you don't have an impact wrench, pre-tension the variator flanges and unscrew the nut using a large ratchet.
  4. Tap the inside of the variator's inner flange to remove it from the keyed shaft, as it can sometimes be retained on the primary gearbox shaft due to oxidation. Certain external parts such as the apron or cradle may prevent this removal (depending on the model). You'll need to uncouple and manipulate the gearbox or motor-box unit to remove the variator.
  5. Now that your gearbox variator has been removed, you can put it on the workbench, and we'll clean and check it later.
  6. To reassemble the drive pulley, proceed in the reverse order of removal, taking care to ensure correct positioning of the gearbox variator key.

CLEANING AND CHECKING REMOVED PARTS

  • Receiver pulley: Check the wear of the different types of shoes. If you judge the wear to be significant, replace them.
  • Remove excess belt dust with ablower.
