A tailgate actuator on a sports car is usually a pump that presses the tailgate upwards when the boot is opened. A tailgate actuator often works like a bonnet hatch when your PSV has one.

It is very often the tailgate actuator that following a pressure defect is the source of a defective tailgate (impossible to maintain the trunk in the open position, slow opening or closing ...). This part wears out naturally with time and the opening/closing of the trunk.
